U.S. to prioritise commercial, investment partnership with Nigeria
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has prioritized strengthening U.S.–Nigeria commercial and investment ties to drive economic growth and mutual opportunities. He announced this during the official launch of the U.S.–Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership (CIP) working groups in Abuja.
The CIP, formalized through a memorandum of understanding in July 2024, will focus on three key sectors: agriculture, the digital economy, and infrastructure. These working groups include high-level officials from both governments and private sector representatives.
Mills emphasized the partnership as a key initiative of his tenure, reflecting the U.S.'s strong commitment to deepening economic cooperation with Nigeria. U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Thomas Bruns also highlighted the partnership’s role in fostering innovation, creating jobs, and enabling sustainable growth.
Senior officials, including Nigeria’s Trade Minister Jumoke Oduwole, Permanent Secretary Nura Rimi, and Julie LeBlanc, took part in the dialogue. The parties agreed to assess progress twice a year and scheduled the next formal meeting for later in 2025.
