Nigeria-Morocco $25bn gas pipeline tops Tinubu’s priority projects – Jimoh Ibrahim
The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, valued at $25 billion, remains a top priority for President Bola Tinubu's administration, according to Senator Jimoh Ibrahim during a session of the African Parliament Union in Casablanca. The pipeline, which will stretch 5,660 km and transport 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, is intended to pass through 13 West African countries, positioning Nigeria as the primary gas supplier.
Senator Ibrahim emphasized the project’s potential to create thousands of jobs, spur industrial and digital development, and support a sustainable energy future across the region. Morocco is expected to particularly benefit by serving as a conduit for supplying gas to European markets.
Currently in the feasibility and planning phase, the Final Investment Decision has been postponed from 2023 to 2025 due to the project's complexity. Legislative support from the Nigerian Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, is also being prepared to address and eliminate possible bureaucratic or legal challenges.
Additionally, Ibrahim advocated for Morocco to ease visa restrictions for Nigerian travelers, suggesting it would foster stronger bilateral ties and enhance economic opportunities tied to the project. The initiative was well received by members of the African Parliament Union, who expressed enthusiasm for its potential regional impact.
