Nigeria, China Strengthen Ties on Marine, Blue Economy Development

The Nigerian Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, welcomed the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters to discuss strengthening cooperation in the blue economy sector. Oyetola emphasized Nigeria’s strategic maritime position, highlighting its 853 km coastline, extensive inland waterways, and rich marine biodiversity as assets for shipping, fisheries, renewable ocean energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure. He stressed that the sector offers significant potential for wealth creation, job opportunities, and sustainable development, and expressed interest in learning from China’s marine economy model.

Ambassador Yu Dunhai praised Nigeria’s maritime resources, reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in the blue economy, and noted the success of bilateral cooperation following President Tinubu’s visit to China a year ago. He specifically cited the Lekki Deep Seaport, constructed by China Harbour Engineering Company, as a landmark example of Sino-Nigerian collaboration that enhances trade capacity and economic growth.

This visit underscores both nations’ commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s maritime potential and deepening economic ties through the blue economy.
