FG, Nestlé train farmers to boost milk production
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with Nestlé Nigeria, has launched a new initiative to enhance dairy production and improve the livelihoods of farmers. Announced on World Milk Day 2025, the partnership focuses on equipping farmers with mid-level technical and vocational skills necessary for efficient milk production. Key areas of training will include milk processing, hygiene, farm management, and modern dairy practices.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which prioritizes value chain development and feed improvement. A central element of the collaboration is the establishment of a Dairy Training Centre in Paikon Kore, Gwagwalada, which aims to professionalize dairy farming and increase productivity.
Nestlé Nigeria, which has been active in dairy development since 2019, has already formed 83 dairy cooperatives, supported over 3,000 milk producers, trained 2,000 farmers, and significantly improved milk quality and output. The company has also contributed by building water infrastructure and vaccinating tens of thousands of cattle. These efforts have resulted in increased income for farmers and reduced milk rejection rates.
A highlight of the program is Nestlé’s Dairy Demonstration Farm, where milk yields have improved dramatically—from 1 liter to over 10 liters per cow daily. Encouraged by this success, the government has invited Nestlé to transform the demonstration farm into a full-scale training institute, which the company has agreed to do. Both partners view this initiative as a key step toward building a sustainable dairy industry in Nigeria.
