FG, Australia deepen mining ties with capacity training for Nigerian professionals
The Nigerian Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has launched a specialised capacity-building programme for Nigerian mining professionals at Murdoch University in Australia. This initiative, developed through a partnership between Nigeria and Australia and supported by the Commonwealth Government, aims to address skill gaps in Nigeria’s mining sector and strengthen Afro-Pacific ties.
The programme originated from a bilateral agreement made during the 2023 Africa Down Under Conference in Perth, where Dr. Alake collaborated with the Western Australian Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and Murdoch University to create a tailored technical training scheme. With support from the Australian High Commission in Nigeria, the initiative has commenced with a two-week pilot course for eleven Nigerian participants. The training covers key areas like extractive metallurgy, sustainable geochemistry, and mineral science research, including practical field visits and engagements with global experts.
Dr. Alake praised the swift realization of the programme and acknowledged President Tinubu’s backing, the Australian High Commission’s active role, and Murdoch University’s hospitality. He encouraged the participants to lead transformative change in Nigeria’s extractive industry using the skills they acquire.
Murdoch University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Deeks, highlighted the value of international collaboration for sustainable development, while Western Australia’s Mines and Petroleum Minister, David Michael, welcomed the initiative as a model of innovative cooperation. Participants will also receive practical exposure through sessions hosted by Australia’s Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.
Overall, the programme represents a significant step in enhancing Nigeria’s mining capacity and sets the groundwork for future strategic partnerships.
