Dangote Petroleum Refinery has unveiled a major investment of ₦720 billion to introduce 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks for nationwide fuel distribution, starting August 15. This strategic move is expected to save over ₦1.7 trillion annually in transportation costs, while directly addressing fuel distribution inefficiencies, lowering pump prices, and improving fuel accessibility across Nigeria—especially in remote and underserved areas.

The company aims to meet Nigeria’s daily fuel demand of 65 million litres—including petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel—by cutting out middlemen and delivering directly to filling stations and industries. This initiative will also generate over 15,000 jobs through the development of CNG filling stations and logistics hubs.

The Federal Government, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), welcomed the project as a significant boost to sustainable transportation and energy cost reduction. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) praised the move, highlighting its potential to ease the long-standing burden caused by Nigeria’s non-functional fuel pipeline infrastructure.

Economists and energy experts also hailed the effort as a structural reform that could reset Nigeria’s downstream sector, reduce fuel price disparities, and stimulate economic growth. Notably, economists like Bismarck Rewane and Ken Ife emphasized the elimination of wasteful middlemen and the promotion of nationwide price uniformity.

Overall, the Dangote CNG initiative is seen as a transformative leap toward cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient fuel logistics in Nigeria, with far-reaching benefits for consumers, businesses, and the broader economy.
